George Malcolm (By Eiman and Iqbal)

In this week's blog, we were assigned to pairs of to do this specific assignment. We were assigned to describe any character and his characteristics and his contribution in the novel. Me and Iqbal have chosen George Malcolm as the character we want to talk about. We feel that George plays a big role in this novel and there are a lot of reasons why he's one of the characters that we like.

     Firstly, George made his first appearance in page 31 where they stated that George would always come over on Wednesdays after school to Joseph's house. Now George was Joseph's best and only friend. George is also referred to as a science nerd and he serves as a relatively normal character in this novel. George is also referred to as a very intelligent student. This can be shown in page 32 where at school, George was considered legendary already. For example, his teacher asked him to do a physics question that was appointed to him. For his remarkable work, his teacher awarded him with a 20 dollar bill because of his excellence. On top of that he is also a generous person. With the money that he had received, he used it to buy the class pizza and shared it amongst his classmates.

     Another speciality of George is that he is a really helpful person and a really helpful friend to Joseph. This can be proven in page 34, where George and Joseph would copy extra physics questions from the library for more revision. On top of that, both of them would hammer through extra credit that the teacher put up for them. George is a really good friend where he would always help his best friend Joseph whenever in need.

     Moreover, George was also a very curious person towards Rose's abilities and gift. He was very curious and wanted to know more about how Rose can control her powers and use them. George is the only helpful person towards Rose and he is the only one who believe's Rose story about her having this special gift and he wants to know more. Based on these pages from 61-66, we can see that George is helping Rose by trying to discover her power and try to understand it. They both go out to different places to try different food and feel what type of emotion she feels when eating these different foods. Throughout this, Rose got to experience different types of emotions and feelings of the people that had cooked the food and this is how George and Rose really discover and understand her power. George is the only one who really listens to Rose and he is the only one she can turn to in the end.

     Lastly, what I like about George was that he was also very thoughtful to invite rose to his wedding. It had been three years since they last saw each other. On top of that, in my opinion i think Rose and George had always had that special connection between them and to see that George was getting married to another person was very shocking to me. Eventhough George got married to another woman, he still even invited Rose to his wedding and offered her a dance because he said she owed him one and I thought that was really thoughtful of him.

     In conclusion, eventhough George wasn't really a big character in the novel but I think he really played his part in his role to be a good friend to Joseph and to help Rose out discovering her power. These are some of his characteristics which I really admire of George and in my opinion he's a real role model to some people.
